Creating complex rosters

| Split rosters

Definition

Single logical roster unit divited into pieces because of:

  • Survey protocol and/or
  • Thematic groupings

Example 1: household composition

Typical PAPI process

  1. Capture basic info on all members
  2. Capture detailed info

Example 1: household composition

CAPI design

  • Create two rosters
    • Different object
    • Different roster ID
  • But each roster points to same source
  • Place one part in one section
  • Place other part in another section

Example 2: education

  • All member-level rosters are continuation of household composition
  • May filter to subset of members (e.g., age > 3)
  • But all member-level rosters
    • Carry forward members from household compostion
    • Include IDs of those members

Example 2: education

  • Create education roster in new section
    • Different object
    • Different roster ID
  • But both rosters points to same source

Summary

  • Each roster must have a unique name, but may share the same source
  • All rosters with the same source question are considered the same roster
    • Variables exist in same context
    • Data export in the same file

> > Nested rosters

Definition

Roster that:

  • Results from more than 1 round of enumerating things
  • Contains row IDs for each round of enumeration

Example 1: Parcel-plot roster

  • Parcels may contain 1 or more plots
  • Parcels are areas with the same management
  • Plots are areas with the same cropping pattern

Example 2: Parcel-plot-crop roster

  • Parcels may contain 1 or more plots
  • Plots may have 1 or more crops planted on it

How to create

  • Create a first roster in a section
  • Create a continuation of that roster in another section
  • Create a new roster inside of the continued roster

Example: How to create a parcel-plot roster

  • Create a first roster in a section
  • Create a continuation of that roster in another section
  • Create a new roster inside of the continued roster
